On February 28th, 2017 the Echols County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 900 block of Valentine Road in reference to a burglary which had already occurred. Upon arrival, deputies noticed that the rear of the residence had been pried open with an instrument and entry made while the homeowner was not there. Several items were taken from the residence including various tools and a firearm. The suspects then exited the residence, loaded the stolen items onto the homeowners Kawasaki Prairie 360 ATV, which was parked behind the residence with the key in the ignition and left the scene after cutting the lock on the gate with bolt cutters. Further investigation revealed that Richard Matthew Burke, age 32, of Lake Park, Georgia and Britney Nicole Rogers (Rudd), age 27, of Dasher were discovered to be in possession of the ATV in Brooks County, Georgia. They were attempting to sell the ATV to a family friend. Burke and Rogers were taken into custody where they face charges of one count of Felony Theft by Receiving Stolen Property in Brooks County and one count each of Felony Burglary and one count each of Felony Theft by Taking in Echols County. Sheriff Courson would like to commend the hard work of deputies and investigators from both agencies who assisted in resolving this case and encourages citizens to be vigilant and if you see something that appears out of the ordinary to contact law enforcement.
