Traffic Stop/Meth arrest
In the early hours of Thursday, July 11, 2013, Sheriff Randy Courson was on routine patrol traveling east bound on Hwy 376 when he got behind a silver 2006 Lincoln LS. Sheriff Courson noticed upon approach to the stop sign at Hwy 376 and Hwy 135 noticed the Lincoln had a left rear brake light out. Sheriff Courson conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the driver, later identified as Courtney Carter, 21 of Stockton, GA. Carter appeared to be extremely nervous. Sheriff Courson also made contact with the passenger during the course of the traffic stop, who was later identified as David Windel Chaney, Jr. a.k.a (Little Man), 32 of Naylor, GA. Chaney was also extremely nervous and could not provide any identification. Sheriff Courson called for back up. When back up arrived consent was given to search the vehicle due to the extreme nervousness and the inconsistency of their stories. A search of the vehicle revealed a small quantity of methamphetamine and tools commonly used for distribution and ingestion of methamphetamine. Carter was also found to be in possession of a schedule IV narcotic. Carter and Chaney were placed under arrest and transported to Lowndes County Jail for processing. Carter was charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of a schedule IV narcotic, and felony possession of tools for the commission of a crime. Chaney was charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and felony possession of tools for the commission of a crime.
